Founded in 2011, Hyperfly established its roots in the jiu-jitsu apparel industry offering training gear and lifestyle apparel. As the brand grew, it refined its image, increased its offerings, and collaborated with some of the most icon brands in street and sports fashion.

The company has also expanded into yoga apparel for women and even dipped its toe into CBD products for recovery. We respect the fact that Hyperfly is willing to venture into new areas unapologetically, and refuses to be defined as merely another jiu-jitsu brand.

And with the quality they’ve put into their grappling products, there’s no reason why they can’t or shouldn’t explore other aspects of sports apparel.

That’s why when their new Icon Training shorts were released, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on a pair. They are the result of hours of research and design, refining the fit and cut of previous offerings, and aiming to create the best training short available.

Overall, we’d say the team over at Hyperfly hit their mark with the Icon shorts. Although they shouldn’t be used for grappling or mat training, due to pockets and zippers, they excel as a gym or workout short.

We’ll start by saying we’ve never been a huge fan of shorts with internal compression liners. They’ve always seemed never to fit quite right or give the added comfort they’re intended for. But that completely went out the window when we slipped on the Hyperfly Icon Training Shorts. The internal liner is extremely soft and insanely comfortable. They even have a small compression pocket  to hold your phone securely against your leg with a headphone access hole cut into the main side pocket!

The next thing we noticed was the incredibly comfortable waistband. If you’re training hard and moving in odd positions and angles, you need a short that fits securely around your waist without compromising mobility or being uncomfortable. That’s exactly what the Icon short provides. The material of the waistband almost feels silky to the touch, and includes an adjustable internal drawcord for a custom fit.

The overall fit and cut of the short is nearly optimal. They have a loose cut to permit for complete mobility during squats, running, etc. but they aren’t bulky or baggy. These shorts rest just above the knee and are made from a four-way stretch material that’s sweat-wicking and fast-drying.

The details are what makes the Icon short one of a kind. From the logo printed drawcord, to the silver metallic embroidered logos at each side cut, to the black embroidered “You Cant Teach Heart” on the back panel, you can tell a lot of thought went into these shorts. There is also plenty of storage with two front pockets and a back zipper pocket for secure storage.
